My name is Sophia Arndt, and I am a graduating senior at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota.
As a current student, I have seen how journalism and focused reporting can impact a city, and how outreach and education can impact a community. I have applied the essential lessons I have learned in my courses to my positions at the Minnesota Daily and the St. Paul Pioneer Press, as I work on reporting important stories within my community while maintaining my education.
For the past year and a half, I have had the amazing opportunity to work alongside my peers at the student-led Minnesota Daily, initially as an Arts & Entertainment reporter and currently as the desk’s editor. This work, along with my studies for my fine arts minor, has helped me write important stories within the Twin Cities’ arts community.
I have come to understand the arts as the beating heart of a community, offering an outlet for the joys and pains of a city. Just like reporting hard news, these stories that focus on the expression of a community and the environment they create are equally essential to share and uplift.
